This week’s spotlight features Roop Balchandani who is a Team Leader at HealthifyMe. Soon after graduation, Roop sought the road less traveled by PTs. He initially worked as a Data Analyst followed by a Consultant at a digital health company. Roop explains in this spotlight what helped him pursue these career paths early on in his journey. Go ahead and read this spotlight if you are looking to go after unconventional career paths!

What is your name and title, workplace?

Roop Balchandani, Team leader at HealthifyMe Wellness

What is your educational background?

BPT (Manipal Academy of Higher Education) 2020

I have done various certification courses in data interpretation, analysis such as SQL, Tableau, and introduction to Six Sigma

What did you do soon after your graduation? How long?

I started working as a consultant physiotherapist in HCAH which is a Dabur India subsidiary within 2 weeks of Graduation. Which was thereafter accompanied as a consultant fitness expert (Medical) in HealthifyMe. It involved handling the fitness of clients with medical conditions online with the help of AI and software.

What did you do after that and for how long?

In the meanwhile, I pursued different courses which expanded my horizon outside of physiotherapy. I ventured into analytics. It was followed by working as a medical data analyst with Vasta Bio-informatics for 6 months. It involved me in abstracting and interpreting complex data of people suffering from Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) i.e. the toxicity, effects of the drugs involved in their treatment.

What are you doing currently?

I am working as a team leader in HealthifyMe. It is an online fitness and wellness platform with over 25 million users. My current KRA (key result area) is overseeing the revenue and quality of my team. Also, I am involving myself in various marketing initiatives that the company is conducting.

How did you find your current job? Application or connections?

All the 3 jobs which I have done since I have graduated, I have got it through Linkedin.

LinkedIn serves as a great tool to connect with like-minded people. Also, the accessibility it gives to apply for the job is unmatchable.

Start working on your LinkedIn as soon as you graduate. The more you make connections, it increases your probability of finding better prospects.

How did you prepare yourself for the interview?

Since the current role was a promotion, I was well aware of the company’s vision and prepared myself accordingly.

I would recommend for freshers/ job applicants to read in-depth about the industry, company/clinic, market what they serve before giving the interview, and never stumble across.

Also, do ask questions to the interviewer at the end of the interview. It shows how keen are you to work for that organization in the future and makes you stand out.

What was the interview process like when you first joined HealthifyMe?

It involved 3 rounds.

  1. HR round- Where the HR assess if you are the right fit for the company
  2. SME round – They do assess your technical know-how and your future vision
  3. Video conferencing- It involves a web meet or a short video of yours explaining a topic about health.

I do work remotely. That said, I do prefer to go to the office once a fortnight to coordinate with various teams across the company.

What do you think can be improved in our field?

The education system should train the upcoming physiotherapist in life skills such as how to find a job, how to market themselves and train them about body language/communication skills that will give them an edge.

Can you name books, courses, and workshops that helped you in your career?

Rich dad / Poor dad will help them build a good foundation on how to plan their assets/liability and build a sound financial future for themselves.

The art of war by Tsun Szu on how to maneuver themselves in different real-life scenarios which they will encounter.

Is HealthifyMe planning to hire more PTs in the future?

HealthifyMe aims to move into further technology and expands its user base beyond 2.5 million. It will require physiotherapists with good knowledge about health and fitness.

What is your advice for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

If you are a person who is starting a job, do remember that until now you were investing as fees/time in the college/education to get a better return in the future.

Once you start working, it’s an organization that is investing in you in order to get a better return. So be the best product that the organization has ever seen and you are bound to grow.

Also, be ready to unlearn the learned and do your work with enthusiasm.

I’ll be glad to assist you if you want to work with HealthifyMe.
