Cover Letter For Physiotherapists

woman, laptop, business

Cover letter is a one page memo to your prospective employer given alongside your resume. We are seldom taught how to write a cover letter as physiotherapists in our PT school. So let’s explore today what a cover letter is, why you need it and how to write one.

As a physiotherapist should I write a cover letter?

Cover letter briefly summarizes your expertise, skills and why you are a good fit for the company. It is not always mandatory to submit a cover letter. But when optional, submitting a cover letter is a good way to show you are interested in a job.

Many times we have a limited space on our resume to write down all our achievements and skills. Cover letter gives physiotherapists an opportunity to write something that you think is missing on your resume. Here, you attempt to convince your employer why you are a good fit. What you can bring to the table if they hire you.

What does the cover letter consist of?

Cover letter should not exceed beyond one page. It typically consists of 250-400 words. Your cover letter includes:

  1. Contact info: Just like any other formal letter, your cover letter will involve your name, contact information and link to your LinkedIn profile. This information is essential if the employer wants to contact you for the follow-up.
  2. Department information: It is a section where you specify who you want to address this letter to. If you are applying for a bigger organization such as a multispeciality hospital, make sure to be as specific as you can.
  3. Opening Paragraph: It is the first paragraph that introduces you to the reader. Make sure to customize it for each job you apply for. If you have any notable achievements/ credentials, you can highlight them here.
  4. The Body: This is where you explain why you think you are a good fit for the role. You can write about your experience, skills and qualifications here. Also, mention how you can help their organization grow and achieve its goals.
  5. Closing paragraph: You can mention time slots that work well for you if the employer wants to contact you. Additionally, thank them for their time and consideration.
  6. Formal Salutation: This is how you will end your cover letter. By writing your name, signature along with your regards.

How to write a cover letter as physiotherapists

Start with the header:

It has your contact information. This should include:

  • Your name
  • Current designation
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Link to LinkedIn profile
  • Date

Remember to include your professional email address. For god’s sake, do not use email addresses such as dreamcatcher@xyz.com. Instead make a new one for your professional endeavors.

Tip: most of the time your name + last name@ email service provider.com is  a good enough professional address. Refrain from using your birth date, birth year in the email address if possible.

Double check to see if the information is correct.

Greet the in-charge of hiring

Take efforts and find out who is in-charge of hiring. Address the letter to them personally.  Avoid using Cliches such as “Respected sir/madam”.  Nobody wants to read a letter that is impersonal. So stop spamming 10+ employers with the same cover letter and hope to get a job from any of them.

You can find out who is in-charge of hiring by asking your friends working in the same hospital. If the company is big enough, you can look it up on LinkedIn. If you are applying at a small clinic, you must know the name of the clinic owner. Write the letter to them.

If you still can’t find the right person, you can address the letter to the Head of physiotherapy department.

Write an appealing body

This is where you can flex your professional skills and achievements. It is important to summarize your skills in light of the position you are applying for. Highlight your qualifications so that you are convincing your employer why you are a good fit for the job.

But don’t just stop there! Remember to explain why you will be an asset to their company/ clinic/ hospital. Note down how you can contribute to the growth of their organization. How your interests and aspirations are in line with their company’s vision.

Wrap up with a call to action statement

First of all thank them for taking time out to read your letter. Also provide your availability for next two weeks so that they can contact you if needed. End the letter on a positive, hopeful note. “Looking forward to hearing from you”  should be more than enough.

Respected Ma’am,

I am writing this letter as I would like to apply for a role of a senior physiotherapist in your esteemed hospital. I am a certified NDT practitioner along with a bachelor’s degree from ABC university.  Additionally, I have 2+ years of experience working in an inpatient setup treating primarily patients with neurological dysfunction.

In my present role, I work in an inpatient rehabilitation unit of a 100 bedded hospital. After completing my NDT certification last year, I have been exclusively working with neuro patients helping them to improve functional mobility, transfers and facilitating return to home. In my role so far, my focus has been establishing excellent interpersonal communication with the patient.

I think your company would benefit from my skills in the following areas:

  • NDT certification and solid 2+ years of clinical experience.
  • Education and experience in treating neuro patients.
  • Ability to adapt to a hands-on approach while being creative and thinking out of the box.

I am sure that your organization will continue to be a success in the years to come and that my skills and experience would be an asset to the continued growth. My time spent as a physiotherapist prepared me for such an opportunity. I sincerely hope that I can contribute as a member of your team.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have more questions. I am available on the contact number mentioned above during weekdays from 11 am to 8 pm. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for taking time out to read my application.

Regards,
